Attorney Discipline and Legal Ethics
A professional license represents not only a substantial investment of time and money but also is the means by which an attorney earns his or her livelihood. If you are facing allegations of professional misconduct, your future ability to practice law may be in jeopardy. Therefore, it is critical to retain an attorney who has experience defending clients before attorney disciplinary committees.
At the law office of Georges G. Lederman, we provide experienced representation for attorneys facing allegations of professional misconduct and ethical violations. The founder of our firm, Georges G. Lederman, has extensive experience representing attorneys before the Departmental Disciplinary Committee, Supreme Court, Appellate Division, First Judicial Department.
With more than 25 years of legal experience, Mr. Lederman has defended many attorneys whose prior involvement in criminal or civil matters has prompted investigations into alleged professional misconduct. A former prosecutor for the New York County District Attorney's Office, Mr. Lederman has a critical understanding of New York’s Disciplinary Rules of the Code of Professional Responsibility. Recent cases we have handled include the following:
- Represented an attorney in a sua sponte investigation into fraudulent billing practices related to government service contracts, resulting in the sanction of only a private admonition.
- Represented a convicted attorney in a sua sponte investigation to determine whether his criminal conduct constituted a "serious crime" within the meaning of the Disciplinary Rules, resulting in the sanction of only a private admonition.
- Defended an attorney against allegations in a complaint filed by a former client that the attorney failed to act competently in the course of the representation, resulting in the Disciplinary Committee's dismissal of the complaint.
Our firm has also represented private individuals who have been the victim of attorney misconduct. In one case we represented a complainant in a matter involving an allegation of excessive legal fees facilitated by an improper attorney-client sexual relationship.
